As part of the project, For over two decades the parents of the students who are honored receive this fine art print through the Traditions Council. The original painting was displayed for years in Rudder Tower on the Texas A\u0026amp;M campus. When train travel was the main mode of transportation, it was the gateway to and from the small community isolated on the Texas prairie, and eventually it became the namesake of the city of College Station in 1938 when the city became incorporated. The original train depot was a very small Victorian building built in 1883. It was replaced by the one depicted in this painting in 1900 when Southern Pacific took over the Houston and Texas Central Train Line. Benjamin created this watercolor painting to depict the depot in the 1920's in a collage with the entrance way sign at the depot expressing the size of Texas A\u0026amp;M. Vehicular traffic slowly replaced train travel, and by 1954 the depot was no longer in use. It was razed overnight in 1966 to make room for the expansion of Wellborn Road.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter years of in-depth research and with his degree in Architecture from Texas A\u0026amp;M, Benjamin set out to design an exact replica of the 1900 depot as his gallery and to promote the arts in the community. This was a very ambitious and challenging feat for an artist with a small gallery. He prevailed, and the depot was dedicated on October 2, 2001 by Texas Governor Rick Perry. This painting was the \"Coming Soon\" sign and official rendering for Benjamin's architectural plans. This fine art print marks that moment in history. There are two edition types, a larger limited edition of 2001 prints and a smaller open edition size. The Corps is depicted in various times throughout history; from it's inception in 1876 with Old Main behind the cadets in their West Point style uniforms, in the top right during World War 1, the top left during World War 2, and at the bottom marching on the Simpson Drill Field for Final Review. The Last Corps Trip poem written by P.H. Duval class of '51 flanks both sides of the interior frame and is superimposed over the historic Lawrence Sullivan Ross statue and the Twelfth Man statue\/bonfire. The neutral gray of those images makes the poem stand out with elegance. The poem is famous for being read at bonfire and musters all over the world. Benjamin and P. H. Benjamin painted this historical scene in watercolor depicting the depot right after World War 2, and it struck a very emotional cord for hundreds of Aggies, their wives, and families. It also held special sentimental value for girls who had traveled from the Texas Women's University for Aggie football games.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"I had so many people tell me that it was them in the picture,\" Benjamin says \"but it is sad now that these people from the greatest generation are no longer around to share their amazing stories. I documented as many stories as I could.\" Benjamin created his gallery in College Station to be an exact replica of the College Station train depot. One of his favorite events at his gallery pertains to three couples that had met at the original train depot in the 1940's and were all married at the same time. Each year, they would meet at various places around the world to celebrate their anniversary. For their 55th year anniversary they met at the College Station Depot, Benjamin's gallery to share a lifetime of memories. \"One elder lady even told me that when she was a little girl living in College Station, she experienced this scene from her point of view, and it was etched in her mind forever. He spent months at the Corps of Cadets Center and the Cushing Memorial Library. Benjamin found these clear photos of a baseball game being played on the campus in 1905 on the site of what is now Kyle Field. These particular photos led to the development of this interesting composition in pencil of Aggie life in 1905! The Texas A\u0026amp;M campus buildings in the background are no longer in existence. The Old Main Building on the left was destroyed by fire and replaced by the Academic Building in 1914, and the Chapel building on the right was razed in 1928 due to faulty foundation problems. When studying the image closer, you can see the local residents are watching the game from their horse drawn buggy, the outhouse, and the freshmen in the Corps of Cadets are forced to sit directly behind the catcher. The older cadets, with identifiable seniority insignia sit more comfortably in the stands.
